To seek and save the lost

In Civil Air Patrol we did search and rescue.  One of the mission types we did was missing persons.  Usually some careless individual, child, or Boy Scout troop would get lost in the woods, someone would start to worry eventually, and wed be called out.  The church is similar, except weve already been called out.

Matthew 28:18-20                    We must go out and search, it is our duty, a                                                             commandment from God.

Here are our marching orders.  This means that each and every one of us must be out working, looking to rescue the lost.

We know we are to strive towards Christs perfection             (1 Peter 2:21-22, 1 John 2:6)

Matthew 9:10-13                       Christ ate with sinners because they needed help and                                                      teaching

Luke 19:9-10                         Christ came to earth to seek the lost

1 Timothy 1:15                Christ came to save sinners

We must be ready at all times

In CAP our motto was semper vigilans, which means always vigilant.  Day or night, at any time, we were ready to grab our gear and go save someone.  Sadly, many Christians dont have this mindset in their spiritual lives. (1 Peter 5:8)

1 Peter 3:15                           Always be prepared to give an answer

-Story of Baptist lady in Lit class.

We also had lots and lots of gear we had to carry.  Depending on the mission, up to 72 hours worth.  Likewise, the Christian has equipment that we need to save the lost.

2 Peter 1:3                             God has provided us with all things

Ephesians 6:10-18                       God has provided us all the equipment we need

We must be active

We had to remain constantly active in order to keep our various certifications current.  A Christian must be active.  We cannot stop searching!

Matthew 10:5-7             At first, only the lost of Israel were taught, but they were                                                        taught.

                                                -Matthew 15:24

2 Timothy 4:2             Teach always

James 1:22                            Be doers of the word

Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23            Parable of the sower.  What if nobody sowed the                                                                  word?

Luke 15:4-10                         Parable of the lost sheep.  What if no shepherd went                                                    looking?

Romans 10:17              How can they come to believe if no one tells them?

Matthew 10:14-15                    Not everyone will hear you, you must often move on.

In CAP SAR, small children would often hide from searchers, afraid that they would be punished.  How often have heard of someone saying, but if I believe that, then I condemn my family, or but if I believe that, then it means Ive been wrong.

We must be accurate

Accuracy and correctness are necessary.  In CAP we couldnt very well save someone if we werent accurate and things werent done correctly.  Likewise, we cant very well save someones soul if we give them the wrong information.

Matthew 12: 36-37              Every idle word will be judged

Galatians 1:6-9               Even if angel from heavenlet him be eternally                                                                      condemned

We must have the proper attitude

Too often we approach people with the wrong attitude.  How do you start talking to someone?  Too often we have a holier than thou or Im right, youre wrong attitude.  People dont listen when we appear that way.

2 Timothy 2:24-26                       Proper attitude in teaching others

1 Peter 3:15                           Give an answer in MEEKNESS

While not specifically talking about saving lost, these ideas still apply:

Galatians 6:1             Meekly, not haughtily teach the falling away

Why should we search for the lost?

For the sake of others-

Matthew 25:31-46                    Not all know they are lost!

Have you ever been lost in the woods or driving down the road?  Chances are you didnt immediately realize you were off the path.  Otherwise, you wouldnt have gotten truly lost.

Acts 17:29-31                    Ignorance is not an acceptable state of being.

Hebrews 10:31              It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living                                                   God.

For Gods sake-

2 Peter 3:9                             He wants everyone to be saved!  It is your job to get His                                                            word out!

For our own sake-

Deuteronomy 30:17            Destroyed if not obedient, worship other gods

James 2:10, 24                    Must follow Gods commandment to teach, it is                                                                     certainly a good work.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14            God will judge every deed of every person.  Be ready.
